How hard do you drive your JL audio's

With a 0dB tone used for setting the gains you will never get anywhere near full power to the subs with music. Use a -3 or -6 dB tone from a real CD (not your iPod or any other mp3 source) to get closer to max unclipped powerto the subs with music.
Because of the transient nature of music compared to the steady nature of the test tones used to rate thermal power handling, you can usually run a good bit more power to subs than the rated power without worrying about cooking the coils. You still have to take excursion limits into consideration because you can kill a sub just as dead by bottoming it hard as you can by toasting the coils. Excursion is typically what is going to limit the power you can run to subs with music. Mechanical power handling is going to depend on frequency and the enclosure that the subs are in.
I love smart people!!

Thank you

thats what I used to set up my amp, and my 6x9's hit harder
6 x 9"s??? hit harder??? are you serious? --- ??? what the hell???

those so-called sound reproducing items are not effective or efficient and cannot possibly HIT anything... they are used by OEM's and people from the 70's and 80's.

Jeez, can ya tell, I am not an advocate of oval speakers... the original design was an attempt, and a poor one at that, to reproduce the "full spectrum of sound" in a lil tiny place. (ie: rear decks, doors, etc) When the industry found they had failed you started to see the co and tri-axial varieties showing up in order to attempt some kind of compensation at the poor sound quality. There is not a single rear deck, door, or other location you cannot put a 5, 6, 7, or 8 inch mid woofer or component set in and get MUCH better sound quality and staging.

Think about it, you do NOT have a consistent cone surface area around the driver of said cone hence when it moves there is (albeit slight) waiver/fluctuation in the cone preventing accurate reproduction, and hence the failure of this bad invention. There is a reason they are sold in Wallmarts, Radio Shack's and pawn shops... The people using them really dont know any better. You sound like you are serious about your sound??? Are you?

of course... this is my "opinion"... I could be wrong... and I am SURE someone will point it out! That's why I love this place so much! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/banghead.gif.8606515f668c74f6de0281deb475b6fd.gif

Just like leg warmers, BIG hair, and bell bottoms...6"x9"s, 4 x 7's and other stupid attempts should go away and NEVER come back again!

p.s...I think I am flaming you now! (go ahead mike-- I am waiting... LOL!)

I have a pair of 18w6's that are getting around 500 per and they want more... I also will be doing a ported enclosure against JL's reccomendation.

Blah, blah, blah ... this speaker is better than that speaker..........why? Are we just going with the popular vote here? ........Hmmm?

If your theory is correct, why did Kicker make a square sub in 2000.

they sell JL audio 6x9's at walmart??

they sell Focal 6x9's at Radio Shack??

they sell MB Quarts 6x9's at pawn shops??

Wow! I didn't know that!

I've heard that theory before, and I didn't believe it then either.

PS. Plagiarism is immoral, but not illegal.

I was thinking of doing a sealed enclosure against JL's reccomendation to get a Qtc of .707
