There was a huge discussion on using an inline fuse on alternator to battery positive for big 3. From what I gleaned, they're completely unnecessary. If the fuse pops, either side of the wire will still be hot, removing any benefits of hazard/fire prevention from fuse use. If the voltage regulator in your alt goes, the fuse won't pop, and you can still overcharge/undercharge your battery.
I'm not saying not to do it. I'm just saying they're not necessary. If you want to put one in, I can't think of any disadvantages.
