How Do You Tell If A Sub Is Blown?

Well, I was driving around playing my sub at the max I always play it at (35/47) but the iPod is at Max too and i dont know any volume levels on it bc its the new shuffle, so I assume it'd be ok. Buuut one day, I was playing it and all of a sudden the sub stops hitting, and i dont remember if i heard any noise, from it, i doubt it, but it stopped. and like 30 secs to a minute later, it started smoking from the port. What does that mean. I turned it off after the sub stopped hitting, and Im afraid to turn it back on now. I have my gain at half, no more, and i more than sure i set all the settings right. But all i want to know is if you think its blown or not. I sound noobish, but whatever.

If you can help me, I'd appreciate it.

I have a 12" Type-R, 4 ohm, wired at 2 ohm

Specs/Stuff in sig below.

Haha, well, to be honest, Im more disapointed if anything rather than mad. I couldnt hear/tell if it was being clipped (Im hearing impaired) and I trusted other peoples opinions, and they didnt mention anything about clipping or distortion bc it sounded good. Buut, I got to the point where I liked the bass/loudness, and if the Type-R doesnt go there when I have to turn the gain down or w.e, then what am I to do to achieve that same affect without distortion? A Type-X? Because I cant fit 2 Type-R twelves in my trunk with a custom box. Will a Type-X overcome/do a Type-R 12" in a 2.5cu.ft. 32hz box? If so, let me know. Thanks.

I used a DMM, and it was too confusing, but I think it got it around right based on your guys opinions in a other thread. And its been playing for over 3 months.

try powering it up again and see what happens. listen for any obvious mechanical sounds

Lol, lemme lick the magnet first. Not, lol.

But yeah, Ill try it one more time tomorrow and see what happens. If more smoke/no sound, then its blown I guess.

How will a Type-X 12" sound compared to a Type-R 12" in a 2.5 cu.ft. 32 hz ported box? And will it be worth it?

type x will sound awesome but it wont have more output. you could stick with the type r but dont clip the crap out of it or since it sounds like you want more output, buy a woofer that has the capabilities to perform to your preferance

Well, what kind of subwoofer should I be looking at, underground or not, that would work great in a 2.5 cu.ft. 32 hz ported box? Unless I should build another box, but the one I have barely fit into my trunk.

Seriously hearing impaired or am I missing the sarcasm??? If you ARE hearing impaired then WHY would you want a subwoofer?

Have you ever felt the bass in your chest? Even if you're hearing impaired, you can still feel the effects of bass on your body. In fact to those with serious hearing impairments, bass is the only way to get any sort of enjoyment from music. Take Beethoven, for example. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
