how do you check your alternator amperage?

Which will probably be at least 100 bucks for a good one.
Most likely more than that. I don't believe I have seen one that measures more than 10a under $200. You might be able to find a actual battery meter only for around that price on the internet.

 
You guys are looking for the wrong style DMM.It needs to be a clamp amp meter that reads DCA as well as ACA.They aren't cheap like the $20 ones most people get that only read 10DCA which is only for small electronic epuipment.But they can be had for 80-120.Blu-point and craftsman make one that will work.
