How do i use the optical output on a HU?

Thinking about getting HU with an optical output but was wondering how would i go about hooking it up? I know that the optical cable will go from the back of the HU but where does the other end goto? amp? and how?

pretty much.

i have seen a few hu/amp combos that will run optical but they are megabucks or discontinued.

What? Why would you say that?? Keeping the signal digital all the way through the processing and only converting to analog at the processor outputs or in some cases at the optical amp itself is a very good way to go. The Pioneer ODR system is based on just that. It's expensive, yes but I wouldn't say there is no use for it.

Or FROM a cd changer in most cases. The Clarion 9255 and the Pioneer P9 head units have optical INPUTS for cd or dvd changers.

For those who have one. Very versatile processor to say the least. Too bad that headunit is so expensive.
