how do i test the actual voltage the amp is getting?

i wanna see if my grounds are as poor as i think they are. i know the voltage my HU gets bc it tells me. how do i use my dmm to test what the amp is getting? do i have to disconnect the wires?

if i am getting the same voltage (or close to it) at the battery that i am at the HU AND the amp, my grounds are good...right?

put the red lead from the dmm on the + terminal of the amp and put the black lead from the dmm on the - terminal of the amp (with the power/ground cables hooked up, no music playing)
