How close to rear in an SUV ( port + subs )

How close can I build my box in the back of an SUV to the tailgate before it has a big impact on sound/SPL. I was gonna quit audio for a while, but now I think I'm gonna do either 3 10's or 2 15's back there and I'm gonna need as much space as I can squeeze out of it. So how close can the port/subs be from the back before it has a big negative impact on sound.

In my blazer the port was facing the rear and there was about 4" of room between the tailgate and the port. Did not seem to affect sound or output and there was no audible port noise. This was just a single 12" sub.

You want to stay at least the size of your port away from your rear gate. If you use 4" ports stay at least 4" away and 6" ports stay at least 6" away. With a slot port that say 7" tall then stay at least 7" away.

Thanks guys, decided on 2 15's and it's gonna pretty much take up the whole back if I want to keep my backseats. Will have to measure and see if I'm gonna have to go subs/ports up to make it work. Is there any disadvantage to that besides port + subs back?

Subs and ports pointed up and pushed all the way back is another option.

In just about every SUV/Wagon install I have toyed with, the subwoofers got louder, sounded better, and produced less port noise the further back they were.

some suv system like a foot of room, some like 3''. until you have the box built its hard to say what will be louder.
