Horn work log (big pics)

hmm lookin at those specs i'm not sure if it will be wise to build a box like that for that MIDspeakers that have a low q(.3 and lower) and have a low fs is more recommended for a horn type box

I know the driver is not really suited for a horn but that's why I can remove the top.

I got too busy making new, water proof, baffles and putting the deflex pads in that I didn't have time to play around much with the horn. I played music for a while the way it is and my friend was blown away. We played around with a bunch of stuff and couldn't find anything, other than some bass mechanik, that made it sound bad. Only the stuff from Quad maximus was rough on it but almost every track on V5.0 sounded amazing.

Here are some pics of my new baffles and deflex pads in. I didn't get any pictures of the baffles on the door but I thought I did... sorry.

The baffles are stained and coated with a thick coat of polyurethane. The polyurethane was just slapped on and thus it looks ghetto. I really just wanted water protection as my old baffles were bloated and swolen from the Florida humidity.

I don't think I'm supposed to give any public reviews of the pads but I'm at least going to say that I would have easily paid $40 for them.

EDIT: By the way, the baffles need to be odd shaped like that because of how they mount to the door. They have to be very shallow at one end or the door panel won't go on and tall on the other so that the top two screws can go in. There is also foam super glued on the back of them to keep them from rattling against the door.

Well, I just did some testing with tones and I maxed out my radio shack meter at it's 126dB reading from 60hz to 350hz. Above and below that, it started droping. 150-200hz seemed a little peaky and extremely loud. It actually gave me a headache. 35hz is pretty weak but you can tell it's there. With the compression chamber the way it is, it gets pretty muddy at higher volumes below 40hz.
I guess you can imagine what two 12 inch subs, off 1000+ watts rms, in 2.7 metre long folded horns, in an 11 foot X 10 foot would be like then... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Actually, I can't imagine it... I guess I need to build one and try it out. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif

My room at my parents' house is going to be filled with enclosures by the end of the year. I'm about to build a high tuned ported enclosure for my 12 in my car next weekend and I want to try out some voigt pipes but I need drivers for those.

Well I just finished putting some scrap wood in the compression chamber and I gained quite a bit of mechanical power handling. It also smoothed out the responce around 40hz. It gained a bit of low end extension and output around 50-70hz. I haven't bottomed it out like this yet and I'm playing some pretty crazy stuff at the moment - I'm talking 20hz and lower material. One song in particular you can listen to here:

http://media.putfile.com/Dawn-of-Living-Boom

That track sounds dаmn nice on this and you can't notice the lack of low-end, as in, it doesn't bottom out. Its very similar to listening to that song on my Sennheiser PC150s.

It is still just as punchy and quick and still sounds beautiful with music. I'm about to go try it out in my car and see what kind of response I get with it in there.

Well I put it in my car and tried it in all different directions. Firing to the rear was the best and firing forward has no output at all at any frequency. I must have been positioned right at a nice point for standing waves. It was actually pretty crazy not hearing anything come from it. Another thing I noticed was that I gained mechanical power handling when the hatch was closed. I guess I increased the length of the horn enough to boost power handling. When the hatch opened playing the same music at the same volume, it would bottom out but not with the hatch closed.

Music sounded a little peaky in the 100-150hz range and it was a little too loud at those points. Late Nite Tip played just fine and had great range. The lowest note didn't have the umph that my 12 has but it was pretty musical. Music was able to drop to about 35hz and after that it rolled off; this was about like what it did in my room from about 55hz and down. Bia Bia was retarded loud and sounded very nice. The low part in that song where ludacris comes in dropped very nicely and sounded very clean.

This song was by far the best sounding song that has ever been played on my system. It made me smile uncontrolably at how amazing it sounded. It was much louder than my av12 with this and had amazing response and kick to it. It blended so well with my front stage that it really freaked me out. I've never heard such high quality staging with a drum n bass song before.

This thing sounded very very similar to my 10" w6 clone in output and clarity. It was more punchy though and had higher frequency extension. The lows were identical between them. I love this thing but it almost killed me trying to put it in the car.

Now some pics:

I semi-rounded the port openings but there is no need for this. The air velocity is very very low, even at high output levels.

lol, glad you're happy with it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

I used 16mm for all my horns... you used 19, so I imagine yours is going to be heavier //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

have fun!

'99 Acura Integra with a lenth of 2.9m from the mouth of the horn to my dash. I might have a chance to meter it this weekend on an AC mic. I would love to see how it does and where it peaks in my car. I'm going to be saddened taking it out actually. I've grown to love it in there so much. It was very comparable in output to my friend's two sealed 10s (MB Quart references) but didn't get as low. Much much better transient response though.

EDIT: I'm probably going to be trying it out in a Ford Explorer this weekend and will get an idea of what it sounds like in that.

Yea, the larger the cabin, the longer the effective length of the horn but without any more gain really. Correct? More objects in the way also helps prevent standing waves too, right?

Facing it forward was really odd. I thought my amp shut off at first.

umm, not sure about the more objects in the way thingo you said...

in the hatch, and liftback, the horns sounded hollow... the bass was tehre, but weak...

the suzuki swift hatch, compared to the ford wagon was like 4dBs quieter...

It's pretty potent above 40hz and goes lower than it did in my room. I'll have to see how it compares in the Explorer which has a pretty decent sized cabin.

It gets loud enough to slightly rattle my teeth, take away function of my rear view mirror, tickle the hairs in my nose, and move my hair when the bass line comes in full force on this song (about 2:30 into the song):

As far as the objects comment, I remember reading about something a long time ago that mentioned having a horn in an open room would kill the response of the sub due to lack of reflections and dampening caused by objects like couches, chairs, and tables. I don't remember where I read it though; it was on one of my horn research google sprees.

well.... not sure if I agree with that...

if the horn has no corner, or wall to load off, then yeah, it will be quieter, like if you were to place it in the middle of a large room...

anyway, these are the cars I tested in:

Haha. It may help the sound seeing that the ratio of enclosure to cabin is probably similar to the 12" horn in the wagon. The testing in the Explorer won't be the best because we won't have any mids/highs unless we both tune to the same radio station. We should still get an idea of what it should sound like though. It might stay there if my friend likes it enough.

just run the horn off the headunit/deck //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/uhoh.gif.c07307dd22ee7e63e22fc8e9c614d1fd.gif lol

should be good for mid 120dBs easily //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
