Horn work log (big pics)

looking good...
now, get back to work making it and get off here!!! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif
My knees can only take so much of this dаmn carpet.

Well, I'm finished with all the glueing and all that random. Everything is drying right now and I should be able to try it out tomorrow. I have a working headunit, 100wrms amp, and computer power supply for testing it in my room. I will test it in my car if it will fit but I think the height may be a little too much. All screw holes have been filled and sanded and most of them are dаmn near flush. I'm probably going piano gloss black so they need to be pretty smooth. I'm not a perfectionist for finishing though since my bike scratches and tears everything in my car.

My room looks like a fuсking sand storm came through; everything is coated in dust. I used a Makita sander with a little dust catcher but it's not 100% of course.

Of course, I ran out of weather stripping and I still need to cover one side of it but I have some more in Ocala.

I don't have anywhere else to do it. I'm not going to take it outside of my apartment and have people give me funny looks. If I would have done that, I would have had to sand with my hand... fuсk that. Don't forget that I had to sand each piece where I had an angled edge. There is no way to get it done by hand without it being jacked.

what's going on with the bend? looks like two of the pieces are too long.

is that the printer that dell gives away? i have one and it ***** pretty bad.
These?

You're seeing the weather stripping extending beyond the end of the wood. I have the stripping being glued down and I am waiting for the glue to dry before trimming them all flush.

No, it's a Lexmark printer and yes, it does ****. I got it about 3 years ago and it's still working so I can't really complain.

yeah, i guess i can see that it's just weather stripping now.

the dell freebie is just a re-branded lexmark.

my roommate bought one last year (lexmark) and it's the exact same as mine (dell).

mine's two years old and is still working, but it's starting to print pretty poorly.

yeah, i seem to go through ink every couple of months (if not more). i do all the cleaning and aligning about once a week, but it still looks bad. i used to just put it on quick print, and it'd look ok and print a sheet in about 2 seconds, but now it looks terrible.

Well, I did about 90% of the finishing today and wanted to hear it so I screwed on the top. I had planned on putting the top on and then getting everything sanded and finished but that didn't happen once I got it hooked up.

I have it in my room in the corner firing up because that's all the room I have here. The setup is extremely ghetto as seen in the photos:

I'm using an Antec Cool Blue 350 as a power source, Kenwood headunit powering an old sony 5.25 random and an Aiwa 5.25 random. The horn is being powered by a profile A200xl that claims 100rms at 4 ohms bridged. The gain is currently all the way down though because mechanical power handling is currently limited.

How it sounds

Wow! I was not ready for the performance I got. I wish I could have got this kind of midbass out of them when they were in my car! It has a very tight and punchy sound with a lot of output. I haven't had a chance to really open it up on some 45-60hz material yet to really see how it sounds. Not much output below 40hz just like expected but I didn't really expect it to drop to 40hz even. It plays very clean and loud up to about 200hz but that is just a guess as I haven't ran any tones through it yet.

To get an idea of how loud it is, I have two 8" subs in two Sony SA-VA3 towers that are in a bandpass and play from about 35hz to 100hz. This single 6.5 is louder from about 60hz and up. Those two 8s sound amazing and have great output and this things keeps up very well. The walls and pictures shack just as much with this as they did when I had the 8s here.

On music with heavy low end (like many sounds found here), the sound is a little too punchy and sounds kind of hollow. This is expected as the driver has an Fs of about 65hz and the horn length is only to 40hz. On most rap, it sounds very nice and strong. The only downfall is with Bass Mechanik style music. For basically any other type of music, the sound is very nice. As ghetto as it sounds, it really blends well with the little ghetto speakers I have hooked up. It has awesome transient response; very aggresive and hasn't missed any notes, even on complex tracks. Songs with fast double bass sound very tight and in control.

This thing sounds really great with all types of music and has a ton of output. I'm really tempted to buy the Goldwood driver that this enclosure was designed around.

told ya horns were good //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

do you have specs for the driver you used in it?

did you displace volume in the compression chamber to bring it down from like 16 litres, to 7 litres or so?

I haven't had the chance to play around with the compression chamber yet and will do that in the morning after I get my deflex pads in.

I actually just found the manual for the mids...

Fs = 55hz

SPL = 87dB

Qms = 9.43

Qes = .77

Qts = .71

Vas = 10.19 l

ok, the goldwood woofer probably wont sound much different to the woofer you have in it...

This is killing me; I want to crank it so bad.

I've been listening to music the past couple hours and it sounds great. I moved it behind my chair and the speakers are on each side and the imaging is great really. I'm going to play around with positioning as well tomorrow and then maybe even throw it in an Explorer to see how it sounds. If it's decent, I may hook my friend up with it.

Bass Mechanik's Toccatta in D sounds amazing. It sounds very similar to my sealed 10" w6 clone; they seem to have very similar low end.

how did you hook your amp and cd player up to that computer power supply?
Yellow wire from PSU to Rem and Battery(+) on amp and black wire to Ground on amp. Then yellow wire from PSU to red and yellow wire on headunit and black to ground on headunit. It's really simple and the PSU is capable of about 30 amp draws.

oh, also, I found that my horns sounded hollow when the amp was clipping... so, that may be the case considering your getto setup ya got there... lol

also, leaving the compression chamber as 16 litres, rather than making it smaller will reduce the woofers power handeling, due to cone excursion, so its possible the woofer is exceeding its x-max too //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

The amp's not clipping, I'm sure of that. I've had this set up before on my w6 clone and I had to crank the gains for it to clip. Yea, I knew right away I needed to take up some airspace when it tried to play something around 30hz at moderately high volumes. I need to be careful on this driver too; I had to re-glue down part of the spider to the basket.
