High-end H/U sonic character

Super Sonic?

Well, the perfect deck would reproduce audio with no character, or 'color,' which is I think the term you're reaching for.
Color, character... what I am referring to is brightness, softness, etc. Sure, speaker choice has a far greater effect than electronics, but a cd player can make a significant contribution, as well. I have read that Eclipse, for example, tend to be bright relative to some other players. Simply tossing out a question and looking for feedback. Thanks for being constructive (as opposed to the other childish remarks).

I have heard(about a bazillion times) that alpines sound "brighter" than eclipse. That has been my experience as well. Ofcourse, some people like that "brighter" sound....I am not one of them, however.

I am sure if you ask a hundred different people, you could get 100 different answers on decks.

I guess I would describe my RF 8250 as just incredibly smooth, detailed and simply the best sounding deck I have ever owned(all eclipses I have owned come in 2nd and then it goes from there).

Thanks, JL. I have an opportunity to buy a new-in-box Denford 8240 (plat1000; not the 2000). I understand that the pre-out voltage is only 2v versus 5v for the 8250. Any thoughts on how an 8240 would stand up in comparison to an 8250? Care to put a price tag on an 8240, anyone?

I had the 8240. Loved it. I sold mine for around $250 shipped on ebay (bought it for $150 shipped //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif ), but the prices fluctuate widely.....$200-$300 is a reasonable price for one. In all honesty, I liked it better than my current Eclipse 8053. Wish I would have kept it.....but, oh well, moving on to bigger and better things I hope //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

As to the 8240 vs 8250.....I've read head-to-head comparisons of the two from respectable members of another forum who determined they couldn't hear a difference between them.

Thanks, Squeak. I bought the deck - $245, shipped (again, new-in-box--never opened). That price sure beats the roughly $500+ price tag for used 8250 units--especially if no discernable difference is evident. Not sure if I'll install it soon, though, as my current comps amp is an old school Soundstream Reference Picasso with no x-overs. I might be going the Memphis Belle route upon which in will go the 8240. Again, thanks for your thoughts.

Oh, by the way, Squeak, what are "bigger and better things?" //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Well, planning to get rid of my Eclipse 8053, Coustic DX-28 xover and PG dual 31-band EQ in favor of a Coustic CD player connected via digital output to an Alpine H701 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif Have the Coustic, just need to double check that it works (ebay purchase), and need to see what kind of deals the local shops can cut me on a H701/RUX-C701 combo (RUX being the control unit for the H701).

Should be pretty killer if I can get 'er done for a reasonable price.
