The MLK165 is incredible!
Due to the distributor's hectic sched in his own shop, we had to go to my own installer to finally try out the MLK in my ride - this set is awesome!! Needless to say, the distributor drove home w/o speakers in his car!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif
My installer was so impressed with the sound that he bought the last remaining HSK165 that the distributor had in his trunk. He was suppose to install the HSK for himself in the event that I get his MLKs - but my installer was persistent, so he finally agreed to sell his last remaining stock.
Compared to my Focal 165V2, the MLK's sound is more "whole" - edges were rounded, precise & more accurate. Whereas the Focals were grainy & had jagged edges moreso in the higher notes. While the Focal's midbass had a bit more output, the MLKs had deeper notes to give.
Overall, the MLKs are dynamic with details that are crisp & more accurate - definitely an upgrade from my Focals!
The build quality on the MLKs are excellent - my installer who is a ECE (Electronics & Communications Eng.) was so impressed with the passive xovers & mentioned that maybe 40% of what I'm paying for the set is because of the xovers.
The MLK xovers are huge - about as tall as the midbass themselves and around 3x the size of my Focal xovers! We couldnt install these behind the dash like my Focal passives, so under the seat they went.
The MLK passive xovers has a HFC - "High Frequency Contour" jumper - but since my installer forgot to bring the manual, we just left it to 'off' for now.
The MLK tweeters are unique in that the set comes with different thickness of "discs" with foam inserts (dampers?) that you connect at the bottom of the tweeter. I think it lets you further adjusts the frequency - again, w/o any manual yet at this time, we just used the thinnest disc & installed it in its angled cup/holder and placed on top of my dash. Its the first time for me to use fabric tweets.
Once installed - they look great! The grille of the mids has a thinner honey-comb(?) mesh that purposely displays the unique silver colored cone as well as the chromed ring with the Hertz name in the four corners.
In the middle of the grille is a stamped(?) "Mille" - this set is intended for "show" display - unless of course you prefer stealth. Both the tweets & the mids have silver grilles.
