Help with Sub box

So a month or so ago I bought a 12" Alpine Type R sub and a Kicker ZX750. I built a 1.4 cuft ported box outta 3/4 in ply. I did ALOT of research about the dynamics of the sub boxes and stuff but im no expert so please dont be too hard on me! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

It has a 3in in diameter port on it and i think it was like 11in long? I used a port calculator to figure out how long the port needed to be so i think thats good... Its tuned to 30Hz from my calculations. The box is completely sealed except for the port, everything glued and caulked

Anyway about one week after i had installed everything my sub ended up blowing and it happened when i wasnt even pushing it hard at all. Im not sure if it was because of me not setting the amp correctly or the back pressure of the box or what so ill try my best to explain how i had everything. Any help on diagnosing what i messed up would be great! The sub was under warranty so i have the new one now and would like to get everything right this time.

heres some pics of the box

if anyone has any recomendations for the settings on the amp such as gain, crossover and db boost on this set up PLEASE give your 2 cents!!!

I have an Apline headunit

Edit: also the sound quality seemed to distort pretty fast and i wasnt getting the same power out of the sub that i was expecting after tons of reviews i read. Will dynomat on the inside of the box make a signifigant improvement? thanks for ANY help!

You need to set a subsonic filter on your amp. Whatever the box is tuned to, you need to set the subsonic for about 5-10Hz below that. If you don't have an amp that has a subsonic filter on it, I dunno what to tell you to do, but maybe someone else knows....

When a box is ported, the sub has a hard time handling power when playing anything under the port tuning....

Edit: I see you have a kicker amp which does have subsonic option on it....if it is not set to ON, then turn it on and that will help....Only thing is Kicker amps don't let you SET what you want the subsonic to be, and i think they are stuck to 20Hz....what is your box tuned to?

And you also need to make sure you set the gains correctly. You don't want to have the sub up so loud that it distorts, or you are going to blow the second one. And keep the bass boost set very low....just use gain and no bass boost if possible.

Ok ill try to find how to turn the subsonic filter on. My box is tuned to 30Hz

and okay that could of been one of my problems because i did have the db boost up almost half way i think. Ill leave that to minimum and then just play with the gain then?

I also have an off topic question but. When using a voltometer to set the gain on your amp. What are you supposed to play through the headunit? When i play music the voltage output varrys with the song so i dont really understand how to set the gain using the voltometer. I do have the calculation down to find out how many volts i need though for the right watt

you do it with a 60hz test tone. you can find them online if you search for them. itll give you a steady number since the music is dynamic and changes frequently.

Thanks i found the test tones on there.

Edit:i scrolled down //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Kicker 750.1 amp has an "always on" 26Hz subsonic, not adjustable or defeatable. If memory serves.
no you can set it on or off

Ok i just looked at it and it does have an on/off switch for the sub sonic. It was set to on already so i think thats what i had it at. Now i just need to use a test tone to set my gain and leave the db boost at 0...?

What is a good crossover setting for the box/sub/amp combo?

thanks for all the help guys

Your ported, turn it on. A good LP crossover point is 80hz.
