Help with rear dash mounted midrange/midbass. Struggling here

Hi, I want to run a single 8” midbass or quality midrange in my rear dash but I’m having hell trying to find one that will work. Most midbass speakers I’ve looked at require an enclosure it seems. I thought a midrange 8” would be like a coaxial and not really require an enclosure to handle it’s rated power, but I’m at a loss here. Do all midrange drivers of this size and bigger need an enclosure? I’ve read that a driver designed for an enclosure that’s played free air will cut its power rating by half. I’m not really wanting to go that route if I don’t have to. Any help is appreciated.

When you say rear dash, are you referring to the rear parcel shelf behind the seats? My initial reaction is to recommend that you look at free air speakers. They are designed for maximum performance without an enclosure.

Another idea is to buy 6.5" midranges and a adapter to fit them in your openings.
Good luck with your project.
