Well I have a set of new component speakers I want to install. I really like the look of the speaker grills that came with them, so I want to use them in the install too. I don't want to just pop off then panel, drop in the speaker, and put the regular panel back on.
I obviously have to cut the ugly factory speaker grill out and fiberglass some kind of thing in it's place. I'm just not 100% sure on how to go about doing this.
The speaker grilles have matching screw holes to the actual speaker, meaning you set the speaker on the ring, then place the grille over it, and then screw them both down at the same time. After noticing this I figured the best bet would be to just cut out the factory grille, attach a ring to the door panel its self, and just fiberglass it to look good. This way the speaker is actually attached to the panel, not the door. Will this have any noticable effect on the speaker, if I do it this way and I actually fiberglass the back of the panel too, so that's it's like a pod, will that be better? And finally, how would I go about attaching fiberglass to the factory plastic stuff? Would I have to just completely remake the entire panel that I cut the speaker grille out of or can you actually just fiberglass onto plastic like you can wood?
The other method is obviously just screwing the speaker and grille down in the factory location, and then somehow cutting a perfect size hole in the factory panel so that it sits flush with the speaker girlle.
Which would be the best way to go?
