Help with AMP and Sub setup.

I have an issue with my Kenwood amp. It seems like a simple problem but im clueless as to what it could be. The amp seems to lack power to the sub. i crank up all the adjustments and it sounds like a stock sub, like crap. Both the amp and the 12" sub have a 500w RMS rating. Heres the wierd the, the other day i turned on the car the bass was really intense, i was kinda of shocked that it was hitting that hard, i even had to adjust the stereo bass to bring it down. Later on when turning on the car once again it sound weak one more even with the stereo bass adjustment all the way up. This used to happen with my last kenwood and and sub combination as well. Anyone know what it might possibly be?

Use good connections. Make sure you have good grounds.

Set your gains properly. Turn the bass boost to 0 at the headunit and flat on the amp. Im going to assume prefab box as well which will also limit you.
