Help tuning mono amp with bass control

When tuning a mono block amp with an external bass control knob, do you turn the knob up all the way before touching the gain? I purchased an Alpine MRV-M500 matching it to a JL 10W3V3.

I also didn't know if the bass knob acts as the boost control or a gain control?

It makes sense to turn it up all the way before adjusting because I would think if i left it zeroed out and got the gain set and then cranked up the knob I would have distortion. Thanks again!
