help troubleshooting my system

ok guys so i just bought a used 2005 wrx, which already has a system of sorts installed. i have not taken off the door cards to see what is in there, but i know i have my regular set of speakers/tweeters in the front. and also a set of speakers/tweeters in the rear. as well as a 12" sub in the back. I have 2 amps. one is a soundstream rubicon 204. the other is a rockford fosgate. So this is what i know: sub is hooked up to the rocford fosgate amp. speakers im guessing are hooked up to the other one. (from research ive done it is a 4 channel amp). now here is where i get confused. i went to install my headunit (ddx470) and well there was only two sets of RCA cables coming in. One im pretty sure is for the sub as it came out of the subwoofer connection for the other headunit. and the other ones i plugged into the connectors for the front speakers, but when i use a fader for front/back it sounds like all of the rear speakers/sub are all on the same channel.. it did not even sound like i was getting sound from the tweeters. if you guys want/need pics ill be glad to provide some. thanks.

Pics would help. You're going to have to follow the current rca's to see exactly where they go. You'll also want a new run of rca's to take advantage of the front/rear/sub preouts of the new Kenwood. It may be possible that the old unit had a loc hooked up to the front speaker wires.

And they could have just split the signal at the amp to run all 4 speakers. The not having any highs from the tweeters could be an amp or HU setting error.

Looks like you're running all the components off ch 1&2. You'll need another run of rca's to ch 3&4, then rewire the speakers to run all 4 channels.

could there be a reason the person who installed it did it this way? also what is involved in the rewiring that ill need to be doing?

Looks like they did it because there was only 2 sets of pre outs on the former hu. So you need to run ch1&2 off the front pre outs and 3&4 off the rear. You need to also make sure the 204 is switched to 4 channel. Then wire the l/r front comps off ch 1&2 speaker out and run l/r rear off ch 3&4.

You will have to pull back the carpet to run another set of rca's. To figure out which speaker is which, you can use a 9 volt battery to test the speaker wires to see which ones are left/right front and left/right rear.

ok, wheew, that makes things much easier, i have a tiny one car garage and getting the seats out/in and tearing everything out would of been a PITA. so im guessing all the smaller gauge wires going into the white plugs are my speaker wires i need to rewire? and the 9v battery thing, just take the battery and hit it with both wires and see which speaker gets power or?

Yes, but before you undo the speaker wires, make note of + and -.
