Help the new guy, subwoofer questions

Hello everyone, I'm new here and to car audio stuff in general. Right now I've got a 15" Alpine in my trunk, and it just doesn't seem like its hitting as hard as it should. I have a 1997 Dodge Intrepid. When you're sitting inside the car, there is an extremely noticable difference in the sound when you have the trunk open compared to having the trunk closed. Is the woofer not getting enough airflow? The box is not sealed, I don't think thats the problem. Any tips?

When you say the box isn't sealed, do you mean it is ported or is it leaking. If it's the latter, you need to seal the box better. That can make a huge difference in your output, install is the most important part of any system.

woofers always will sound different with the trunk open. do you mean its louder in the car with the trunk open?? this would be a frist for me. where is the sub in the trunk and which way is it facing?

bassrulescarz was asking what model alpine sub was it.. nto if it was alpine. and also what size box, what tuning frequency and how much power do you have going to it?

its louder in the car with the trunk open, yes.

the whole system sounds awesome with the trunk open, you can feel the sub hit, you can see the mirrors shaking. but when you close the trunk. you dont get any of that.

the sub is in the center of the trunk, facing toward the front of the car.

please answer stuff about sub model, power, box, etc that i asked in previous post..

also, have you tried facing your sub towards the back of the trunk? most cars yield the most SPL when their subs are facing back. play around with position in the trunk in reference to thier position in the trunk.. but i would say face them back if you havent tried this already.

Turn that sub around, you'll be amazed how much of a difference it makes.

I would most definitely second that, and also I have never heard of a system sounding better with the trunk open, usually the power of a sub is reduced by like 50% or so when the trunk is opened...

id love to. but i dont know the sub model. its from the early '90's. the box is a q-logic, i dont know how many cubic feet it is. the amp however is an alpine mrd-m501. 500w i think.

What does the sub look like?
