help setting gain.

alright i tried it, but i had to turn the bass boost on the amp up so i could get my 40 volts reading with out maxing out the gain. does this sound wrong? is it bad if the bass boost it up on the amp? i had the DMM set a 200 ACV.
the input sensativity is at 1 on a scale of 0.2 being max and 4 being min. the bass boost is at 15 out of 18 and my subwoofer control on the HU is at 5 out of 15. does this sound about right? i just dont wanna blow my subs of amp.

oh and when i set my HU volume to 3/4 up to tune it, is that what i should play it at while im just lissioning to songs to get the full RMS that i wanted?
this sound right to you guys?

where in gods name did you get 200VAC? its sqrt(power*resistance), which i already stated is around 40V. set your gain/input sensitivity so your DMM reads 40VAC. keep bass boost OFF keep HU at 3/4 volume while setting (with 50Hz test tone playing). and make sure to not excede 3/4 volume ever unless the song has very low output.

and now that i think about it, id probably have your HU's bass setting around mid (~8 outta 15) so you can turn it up or down for songs with low or high bass.

no the setting on my DMM was 200 ACV. i got a reading of 40 V. but if i did not turn up the bass boost i had to max out the gain knob to get the reading of 40 V. ill try turning up the sub control on the head unit a little more and then use less bass boost on the amp its self.

Hey guys can I used a clamp meter for setting my gains?

I have this:

sounds like something may be wrong. but id try turning your HUs bass all the way up. just keep the bassboost on the amp at 0

all right i did that and i barely had to use bass boost. do you think the problem is that my head unit prreout only puts out 2 volts? is that why i would have to turn the gain up more?

Yes that is one problem. I have the same problem with my HU because the pre-out voltage is only 2v. I can't get my desired voltage, even with the gain maxed.

I set my gain with an oscilloscope to make sure there isn't any clipping.

My next headunit is going to have higher pre-out voltage so i can set my gains easier.

ya i bought this head unit before when i just didn't want subs so i didn't worry about the preout voltage. but i finally got my descried voltage with out using bass boost so im happy. thanks for all the help everyone i appreciate it.

no, 2V preouts is fine. if you HAVE to use bassboost to get the required V, theres a problem. try another DMM. check all connections. check V at HU preouts and at the end of the rca's. and maybe if that dont work, try turning your HUs bass all the way up. it may just be how the HU works
