Help Please...Frying Coils on SPG-555

well its not bottoming out because id hear it and im not saying my gains are set correctly but i dont see how it couldnt handle what im giving it. iv seen people with the same sub abuse it more. i have a dmm how can i set my gains correctly? and how can i tell if im sending a clipped signal?

oh and the box is the ported boston gtuned box

Thermal failure is more then likely due to a clipped signal.The sub isn't getting the excursion it needs to keep the coil cool.

my gains less than half...that should be fine. and bass boost on amp and deck is set at 0. the deck goes from like -24 to +6 i think. i have it set at 0.

That sub needs time to break in, and good thing bass boost = 0

I'd say clipped signal but I'd need to look at the setup

if you have a preamp w/line driver built in or x-over w/ builtin line driver you will have to turn the gains down lower. you could still be overdriving the input on the amp if you have one of these processors inline.

The gain dial is not relitive to output like your thinking(i.e. half way being half power).Just cause its half way up doesn't mean your not clipping the signal.Set your gains with a DMM to KNOW what kind of signal you are sending.

electrical system is shitty. i get voltage drop on my battery when running but not to bad when im moving. im gonna upgrade my alt and get 0g wires soon.

i turned the gain down for now but now the subs barely hit :/

Well, there is part of your problem right there.

you have to really be doing something wrong to blow that sub. it isn't easy to blow those. you will smell it a little in a ported box for a while. a little smell isn't bad, smoke is.
