Help, new W7 owner

I'm a relative neophyte when it comes to car audio. I had a 1999 Chevy S10 with a MTX 9500 and MTX4501 amp. It was my first system and was okay. I recently purchased a 2010 Jeep Liberty Limited and decided I need more sound again in addition to the factory upgraded Inifinity sound system (built in 8in sub), which sounds pretty impressive for the factory I think.

I just bought a a JL Audio 500/1v2 that came with two 8w7's. Now, I've yet to start any installing and wanted some input on what I should do. I was considering selling one of the 8w7's and just running one in a ported enclosure. Would that be too much power for one, or too little power for both? I'm not looking to get crazy loud, but rather would just like to have the most efficient setup for what I have. Would one or two 8w7's sound better off that amp? Any input would be greatly appreciated. If it's not too dangerous or anything I would like to go with just one to save space and get some money back. Suggestions?

cone area > power in this case. either way you'll be running 500 watts rms. So doubling the cone area should be louder (more efficient) given the box is big enough for both.

Youre gonna have people tell you to sell it all because its JL just //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif but in accordance with what kushy_dreams said you can get better subs for the money (depending on how much you spent on em) but if you already have the setup, as slow as stuff has been selling lately, I'd say use it. the w7s are not bad subs by any means. I'd love to try some 8w7s one day.

Well would the two sub setup sound different outside of volume? Ive read people that the recommended 250W seems underpowered. And for the non answers already posted, I'm just an everyday driver that just likes bass and I heard a W7 and thought it sounded great. I know some people hate on JL for the value but I got this stuff used in a great deal. Please stay on point to those responding.

nope, only difference will be volume. a well designed box will handle the rest (i.e getting low, accurate punch) According to JL's site, 250w is right above the minimum. I've also read some bench test results that say those slash amps do atleast a good 600rms not to mention its constant power regardless of ohm load. So I think you'll be fine and it also gives you headroom to upgrade your amp later.

You could get better performing subs for the same or less price as the w7s, unless you are hung up on JL and refuse to run any other brand.
why is it everytime someone asks about there JLs people chime in with this nonsense... he wasnt asking to help him choose brands, he already has them and is looking for advice on his setup.... why not just help his question or not post at all. And you have no idea what he paid so how can you say its not worth it??

Sorry to the OP, the amp will not be too much for one, just tune it accordingly. One ported will sound very good, either way you cant lose imo.

So what I'm getting out of the responses here is that I'll get a bit more volume with two (obviously), but shouldn't really lose any sound quality against one with more power? In that case it seems like one should be plenty loud for me, and the other going up for sale. I guess I'll have to just see what the one alone sounds like and can always add the second if it seems necessary. By the way, $550 for a 500/1v2 and two 8w7's altogether is what I paid. Seem reasonable?

Any recommendations on where I can get a good box built to spec online? I can only seem to find cheap stuff.

yupp! i woulda paid it!

pm prorabbit or some other box builders here on the forum

personally just gonna throw this out there if I had those I'd throw them in a low tuned ported box 28-30hz. Those subs may not be loud but they can hit the low end real nice.

Those W7s are decent for sure. With the correct enclosure I would think you would be very pleased with the overall output and sound. Not to mention that they can dig down plenty low enough.

As for enclosures I would be happy to help you out. We currently have a 15% off sale right now as well.
