in designing, or matching components to my HU. Might say I've been out of car stereos way too long, was back in the '60's and '70's since I last fooled with this stuff when it was pretty simple. Just when I think I have something figured out, wham! another curve. Here's what I have...'73 Corvette, new HU is Custom Autosound USA-5, 60X4, I did the rest 'blind', want 5 1/4" coaxials in the kicks so, e-bay'd a pair of Pyle PLG5.2 (70 watt RMS/140 peak) Sound like crap! Mistake?

Building a panel for the rear for 2 6X9's and an 8" sub (have a Legacy on order), just bought a pair of Sony XS-R6941 4-way (50 watt/240 peak) Wallyworld specials.(not in yet) Another mistake? My hopes were to be able to drive all the speakers off the HU and just amp the sub. Is this possible? A friend has a 2-ch amp I can get for next to nothing. OR, am I going to have to amp everything? Mind you I'm battling a 383 stroker coming through 40 Series Flowmasters. Loud! I would DEEPLY APPRECIATE everyones opinions including different speakers, suggestions!

and amp recommendations if a 4-ch were needed. I'm retired so $$$ is a bit of an issue. I've been to http://www.woofersetc.com and see many possibilities but just too dumb to figure anything out. I'm hearing on the 'Vette forum that RMS is the more important figure to match speakers than peak power. Sorry for the long rant, and surely hoping someone can come to my rescue! Thanks ahead...Randy

I dont mean to bash that equpmint but that legacy sub is going to **** horribly, as will the sony speakers, and I hope you havent already ordered them. I would suggest the links below.

Sub

Amp

http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=4876

Components

http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=13541

Then bridge two of the amps channels to give the sub 180 watts rms and then just hook up the components normally. Also, just ditch rear speakers totally but if you absolutely insist on having them just get a cheap pair and power them off the HU.

All for under 300 bucks. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Fargof,

First off, Thanks, for the reply AND the bash. I need it. Already bought the Sony's but can take them back. Haven't bought the sub yet, here's the deal, it's going into a panel in the top of the luggage area and I only have a max depth of 3 1/5",

the Legacy fits that, wasn't aware they'd be crap! In the kicks I wanted the coax because of limited space there, for the crossover. Any other options? If you truly don't mind?

I wasnt aware that you were planning on running the sub free air, itd perform much better if you put it in a small sealed enclosure. If that doesnt work out, you could either get an IB (infinite baffle, i dont know much about this so youd have to rely on someone else) subwoofer, or you could get a shallow mount subwoofer and mount it in a very thin box in the boot.

Heres some coaxals that should do well with you situation.

Honestly, I'd try to keep everything as stock-looking as possible.

Forget the rears, they aren't going to do anything but pull the soundstage back. Definitely amp the front stage, and preferably use speakers with high power handling...I'm thinking Boston Pro50's if you can find them used.
