help me understand crossover

Ok I understand that different frequencies make different sounds. What I don't understand is how a crossover works in a component system. Say a 3 way component with a crossover ... How does the crossover come in play.

I understand it cuts out bass in the tweeters, but do the mids get the same frequencies as the tweeters minus the bass?

No...in a 3 way,the woofer will play to around 4-500hz

The mid will take over from there and play to around 35-4500hz,

Then the tweeters will take over from there.

All frequencies used are just for example.

So each speaker is playing only those frequencies? Basically if I was to go active and the numbers you gave are the crossover points on the crossover that came with the system, I can punch those numbers in on an external crossover and its gonna do exactly the same thing and sound the same?
