i have a 9887 and am very happy with it. i can't really comment on other aftermarket HUs

Send the Eclipse back and get the CDA-9887. I just ordered mine and it will be here tomorrow. I'm a previous 7998 owner as well! The 9887 doesn't have as detailed of a graphic EQ, but does 6 channel TA, you can turn off the internal amplifier (just found that out) which basically makes it a dead head like the 7998, 3 way active xover (F/R/Sub or Low/Mid/Hi), 7 band graphic or 5 band parametric, plus full speed iPod controls and the new Imprint technology is pretty sick from what I've heard. I can't think of any dominating features the 7998 has that this deck doesn't...
