Well, I think it is finally time to upgrade my old head unit. It has served me very well, but I want something new in the dash. I am busy doing research on what do get next, but maybe you guys can offer some help.

Things I liked about the alpine:

great sound quality

front/rear/sub crossovers

easy to setup

crisp display that isn't too flashy

Things I'd like in my next HU:

all of that + Ipod integration (i know the 7998 has limited control)

I'd consider any brand. I have a good budget too $250-400ish.

What are some suggestions?

i love my 9887 and wasn't a fan of the eclipse cd5100 if that helps you any //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif.

P.S. I hate pioneers new lineup because of that fuse problem so I said no to all of them.

I would go for something in the pioneer line if they fixed that problem. They have all of the specs I want but I don't want to mess with that.

May Pioneer 980 worked great with my 5 gen Ipod! My new Classic 160 gb is a little different and the 980 is having trouble with it! Before you buy anything, I'd make sure it supports the latest Ipods! Its not Pioneers fault or Alpine or any of the HU makers. Most of the features still work but song info is on and off. Apple is way cool and Sucks at the same time.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/redface.gif.62fdbfe1a101588a808c4cff71bcb942.gif

x2 my 860, 880, 780, 7800, and 980bt never had a problem with fuses or the noise in the rcas

i personally depending on what ur doing with ur system get the 880 for sq

or if u want something a little more flashy the 780 or 980 or the new

deh-p790bt the ipod cord for the 2007-08 models is only 15 bucks and controls the ipod flawless

what is the fuse prob people are having i usually use pioneers in my installs i do for people never had a prob except with a 7700mp thats with the rotary knob breaking off (dunno how my bro did that)

The Alpine 7998 retailed for $799 3-4 years ago and you are looking to replace it for $200 - $400 with something equivalent? You sure are optimistic, ever heard of inflation?

You are not going to match the quality and features of the 7998 in that price range, and if you are thinking iPod then you certainly don't need a SQ unit because nothing that comes out of an iPod has anything to do with SQ.

Stick with the 7998, even used ones are selling in the $300 - $400 and they are still better than any of Alpine's current offerings like the 9887.

I'm not being optimistic, electronic technology advances and prices go down while more features are added. I also wouldn't be walking into an over priced shop and paying full price for what I decide on. I use an ipod and still worry about sound quality. The main reason I use one is for audio books, and as of now I'm using an FM transmitter to broadcast the signal, which is less than optimal. My system is really simple and sounds perfect to me with little to no tuning or adjustments needed. The main thing I need is active crossovers and a decent EQ. If they updated the 7998 with better ipod controls and a few other things, I'd consider getting it again. Good head unit for sure.

Anyways, I've been thinking these so far after some consideration:

alpine 9887

eclipse 7000/7100 (people either love or hate these it seems)

maybe something pioneer if I can get it cheap with a warranty, not sure yet.

I would give the 9887 a shot. I thought about doing that, but I am actually very happy with my CD7000.

I have actually owned the 7998..two different times. Nice HU, not at the same level as my previous Alpine combo though. Nothing that I've had so far has sounded as good to me.

Well, I went ahead and picked up a eclipse 7000. Brand new it was $299 shipped with the ipod controller. I got it all set up a bit ago and so far I like it. I have tons of tweaking to do though. I will give a comparison review later.

the older alpines i love. anything new i dont think compares to the old 7998 imo...

get a `AI-net + power to Ipod` cable

and use the AUX/CDChanger just all controls are ipod controlled

Well, it turns out my unit is defective. Every 4th or 5th time I start my car the screen on the player doesnt turn on. It also doesn't register pushing any of the buttons but source/off. I can still listen to what was playing, I just can't control it or see the screen. Sucks for me. Also, ummmmm, does this thing have a pause button??? I have read preset 3 pauses, but that doesn't work on mine...
