I just recently got a DEH-P4900IB Headunit and alpine sps-17cs rears along with infinity 4022i for my front speakers

two friends have told me i need to get an amp for these or my headunit will die and another friend said that the speakers would blow or short out if i dont get an amp.

Any truth to this? im really new to car audio and my headunit says 50x4 for wattage

and my rears pull 250w max and my front pull 105 max which if i turn my volume up loud is way more than my headunit can give.

Do i need an amp if so what should i get? i am also planning on adding a subwoofer in a month or two if that makes a difference im looking at 2 12"

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also are these speakers any good? I also have to turn my headunit up to vol ~40 to get my music somewhat loud. is this normal?

My car is a 1993 toyota corolla

You head units internal amplifier puts out 22wrms x 4

I looked up the 4022's and they take, and i quote "power range: 2-35 watts RMS (105 watts peak power)"

Im guessing the alphines take somwhere around 20-40 rms also. So if, you should be alright for time being. dont crank it up all the way, play modestly.

1.) No, there is no truth to that. Your friends are talking out of their @sses.

A speaker does not draw power, it utilizes what is given to it. You can feed a speaker 22w and it will not ask for anymore, just as you can feed it 50w and it won't ask for anymore.

Speakers are rated like so:

RMS (or continuous) POWER - max sustained power from an amp that the speaker can handle without damage.

MAX (or peak) POWER - max power in a very very quick burst (

Depending on the speaker and using copious amounts of care, you can often exceed the RMS power rating by a little to sometimes quite a bit (2x or more the power) without rendering damage.

2.) It never hurts. You'll only need something around 4x50W RMS, and the Profile Clarus CL440 comes to mind. Decent little budget amp and does near as advertised. Just be cautious with the gain setting and utilize the HP Filter for the front channels, as your Inifnity 4" speakers won't be able to take much abuse.

3.) They are decent. Not superb, buy they will certainly perform as advertised. A little tweaking and an amp will make them "come alive" so to speak.

Oh, and 4) Your friends are talking out of their @sses!
