I currently have an x300 and its way too old.

Gotta get all ready for hl2 ep 1.

I like ATI cards, but I can go with whatever.

Best deal out there IMO is the XFX 256mb Geforce 6600gt for $150. A machine in the shop I'm sitting at now has the older less powerful 128 meg version and it handles HL2 / Lost Coast just fine at high detail / decent resolution. $200 will get you a 256mb GF6800. At the current time, there's no reason to consider ATI when Nvidia performs better, is cheaper, and has better drivers.

If you're really out there for a good card, $500 will get you a 512 meg GF 7900 GTX. A machine here has one, and soon two in SLI once UPS shows up today, and that ***** will play any game at any detail at any resolution with no problems whatsoever. (Call of Duty 2 at 2048x1536 max detail 70FPS+ is especially impressive)

PCI, or PCIe? and pricerange?

$180 - geforce 7600 gt 256mb pci

$132 - geforce 7600 gs

$112 - geforce 6800 xt pci 256mb

$124 - geforce 6600 gt pci 256mb

those would be what i would look into personally. in fact, i have the 6600GT. ( got it about 4 or 5 months ago when the 6800 was the highest on the nvidia lineup )

I want to look into either sli or crossfire too, but I may have to spend more money.

Well you could always just get one car now, and the other one for crossfire/sli a few months later. Im thinking of going with a 7600 GT

go with the 7900 gt. I think itz around the 300 range now. Not sure.
