Help in chosing sub for Camaro!

Currently I have a IDQ12 in a fiberglass stealth box I built that is about 0.7cuft. This is being driven by 250W. I am not happy with the sound because the enclosure is just too small for the 12". It hits extremely hard, but sacrafices low bass.

I just bought a PPI4100 which I plan on powering my Focal 165K2 with and a sub. I have been debating on what I want to do for a while. All I know for sure is that I'm going to try some '05 Alpine Type R. Here are my ideas:

1. Put a 10" Alpine R in the stealth box and power with 400W RMS

2. Build a box for a 15" Alpine R with 400W

3. Build a box 2x10" or 2x12" Alpine R with 400W

4. Build a box for 2x10" or 2x12" Alpine R. Run my front channel tri-way with a crossover power 1 sub with 400W from triway, the other 400W off the rear channels of the amp

5. Buy a PPI2100 to power the front and power 2 subs with the PPI4100

Whew... option 1 cost me $75 and building a new baffle for the stealth box but I don't know if I would be happy.

Thanks,

Brian

the sub you have is a good sub, its a mistake to get rid of it.

1.can you build a new bigger box for the id?

2.port the .7box?

3.bigger amp on the id and eq the upper bass out a little?

Does your car have t-tops?

Because if you don't, or if you don't care about losing the well area of your car, then you can look into one of the q-logic sealed boxes that fits in the well of your car...like the one in my car, just click on the link in my sig...The box sounds good and has plenty of space for the alpine's if thats what you want to put in...

get one of these and put a baffle over one of the openings and then port it based on available airspace.

1. I could it would have to be a well box. It is a 2+2 speaker so I can't add another, I could only run the one. Which I may consider and run ported... ugh

2. No place to port, I think that would make my troubles worse.

3. I have tried this and it is like trying to defy physics, no matter how much 30Hz you put in it won't come out.

This is exactly the type of box I would build. I am stubborn and will build my own rather than spend the $$.

This leads back to my questions though. Should I try a 10" in my box or go this route. The is would be to do either of 2-5. Which I'm still up in the air.

Thanks for the quick responses btw!

Brian

I would do the 2x12's, i think you will enjoy the sound more than 10's, and if the box you build is just like the one i showed, then it will be plenty big for 2 12's...
Would 400W RMS be enough though for 2x12?

I had another idea just now. Build a subthump type box with my IDQ and port it. I just looked on their site and the response curve they show all the port basically does in dramatically increase the subs output. Then run the 400W RMS to it. Seems like that could get rediculously loud and maintain its SQ with just 1 sub.

Anyone have any ideas about the tri-way thing? Anyone tried this?

I used to run my 2 jl 12w3v2's off 430 rms and it sounded good. So depepnding on sub choice 400 will be fine...And porting your IDQ would be insanely loud so it is an option...

x2 on #1 I may be completely wrong and am sure I'll be told if I am //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif but I don't think you will get the low end you want off of a 10 in a .7^3 box. I would also recommend building a new box.

Those cars are awesome. You can run crap subs and it still gets loud because of that little storage area where you can put 2 subs. THe one I road in had two 10's.

I got the PPI4100 installed. I tweaked it and my headunit to eq as much 40Hz as possible and it did help. I think I will try building a ported box for the IDQ I have because the SQ in incredible, even without the low end.

Image Dyamics web site says for a 1.5cuft box it needs a 3"x13.75" port. This would give a ported frequency of 28hz. I have tried making ported boxes before and they never sounded good. How far from the side and bottom should I have the port? That is a long port, I don't even know if I have depth for that.

Anyway thanks for the suggestions! Great forum, glad I found it.
