Help choosing a computer

I guess Ill just check out some websites and pick what looks good in my price. I wanted to shy away from large electronic stores like I would for car audio but I dont really know where else to look.

also if ur a college student, try signing up for dell's EPP program. Thats how i got a good deal on my laptop. You just put in what school u go to and i guess they check it out, and u can get some pretty good deals. Its designed for students.

If you are already blowing 7 bills on a laptop, don't settle for a 1.6Ghz celly. If we were talking 4-500 bucks I'd say go for it, its got what you need for what you need it to do, but for 1-200 more you can get a machine you will enjoy using a lot more.

for about 200 bucks more than 700, you can get a nice Core Duo 6400 with the high resolution gloss display, which is genuinely impressive to me even after having it for months. It's your call, the 700$ hp will get the job done fairly easily for what you want it to do, but the extra 1 or 2 hundred bucks is basically getting you a porsche 911 instead of a ford taurus.

Which is why I started this thread. I have no knowledge of computers except bigger numbers are usually better except on prices...

Some specific suggestions would be great and places to get them would be my ultimate dream.

If it's absolutely not gonna be used for gaming, get a new Macbook. Can run whinedoze and OSX, Core2 Duo processors, super stable, built in wireless and bluetooth, pretty much everything you will ever need along with the top rated customer service in the industry. Just my .02, but then again I'm biased, all I run is Macs.
