Headunit Help

So i have an older eclipse headunit, and whenever i turn up the volume past say 55 it just dies, the display shuts off, and within a few seconds it re powers up, but if you dont turn the volume down, it will just continue to do it. Now i thought it was a power issue, like to much power draw, but it cant be because i have an amp on the speakers, so there should be plenty of power. Any ideas what is up??? Im thinking maybe the headunit is just old, and ready to retire. Any input on what could be the prob would be appreciated!!!!
