having 2 different sub to compliment each others?

just a thought here. if you have a single sub that is sq sub but not loud, can you add another different kind of sub that geared towards spl but lack in the sq department to offset the lack of output from the first sub?

or is it better to add a second same sq sub add in to boost the spl side of the output?

You can XO to different subs. i.e 20- 40 for a 12" sub, 40-60 for a 10" sub.

As far as running different subs over the same range, like you've heard- supposedly won't sound good. I have never tried it, and I doubt most other people offering opinions have either. Simply because the general consensus has always been it won't sound good. If you have the subs- try it. You may like it. If you are looking to purchase the subs yet- you may want to experiment before throwing down the big bucks, or just stick with one type of sub.

tried it when younger.

doesn't work, it could, but would require A TON of tuning and if you knew that you wouldn't of asked the question, so no it won't work.

This is like the logic of adding 8's, 6's, 5's to your system to make sure you have every frequency covered. In fact it just makes things much more difficult because you need to have very advanced crossovers to make sure one driver isn't stepping on anothers frequency range.

Not to mention two different drivers trying to produce the same sound can cause some seriously bad harmonics.

In short, don't do it. Or do it but don't expect it to sound as good as either sub run alone. It may be louder, yes, but thats just because you've increased cone and voice coil area.

One of my friends tried it but i never herd it. He had a kicker comp vr 12 and a crossfire db 15. He had to seperate amp's. He said it didn't sound to bad. But im not sure what he thinks sounds good.

Good observation. And to the OP, that's not an insult. I would not/could not do it either.
oh, don't worry guys. i didn't take it as insult but infact i find it all of you guys reply with a proffessional way. this is not what i'm gonna do but it's one of those kind of question that i can guess the outcome is not a good idea but can't figure out the reason. kinda like question...why.....outcome, i know the question and outcome but didn't fully understand the why part. you guys fill me in and now i understand it. now i understand the cancellation and harmonic issue that explained why this is a bad idea.

thanks. guys.

One thing you said was correct though. Using multiple SQ subs will give you a the potential for high SPL as well as good SQ if needed. You do want those to be the same subs in the same box (or 2 boxes that are the same)

I have never tried it, and I doubt most other people offering opinions have either.
I tried it with two Profile Baja subs and a single MTX 8000. They both had their own amps and enclosures. The single 8000 was louder than when all three subs were hooked up. It also sounded MUCH cleaner when just the 8000 was running. The two Baja 12s were about as loud as all three and sounded better as well.

each sub can add it's own charictaristics. keeping simple is better.

from the sq stand point and having a louder/not as good sounding sub, will about nullify the effect of the sq sub. not in cancellation, but because you will have a degraded sound being louder than your better sound.

if you have a loud, tight hitting sub running 40-80hz, then a loud, deep hitting sub running 60hz all the way down, you can have results you're after. it's all about installing it and manipulating it, to get the sound you're after. "right", "wrong", "overlapping", if you get it to sound the way you want it to, that's who you need to make happy.

way back in the day when we were limited with amplifier power and subs designed around what was available, it was common that people would run a 18" this and 2 10's that to get the sound and loudness they were after.

don't be afraid to try anything crazy, that's how we learn.
