Has anyone here ever tried staining MDF?

Just curious, but has anyone ever tried staining raw MDF //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

you can buy veneer and cover the mdf.

worthless. the hole reason to stain wood is to help bring out the grain of the wood. mdf has no grain. NOW, if it was the nice birtch ply, i'd say hell yea stain it.

if u do a good job with the primer though, paint will look really good on mdf. u might try that as something different.

I have stained it before and it didn't look bad at all. I used a dark walnut color and I was actually surprised by the results. A lighter color would look pretty lame though but the dark color kind of gives it a neat texture that doesn't look like a bunch of sawdust even though that's kind of what you would expect it to look like.

cool. i have an a$$ load of cheery veneer from when i worked in a veneer factory i was goin to put on my next box and stain it. i think it would look sweet with the C/F cone on the DMX's. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

i've stained it in the dip table that i made (my ava). just used some pre-stain conditioner and about 5 coats. looks pretty **** good. used a gun-stock color, kinda mahogany looking

I have stained it as well out of curiosity of the results. Like Imma, I used a darker stain, roughly 2 coats. It really didn't look too bad. IIRC the edges will stain a bit darker than the face. I'll take some pics if I can get around to it.

miter joint your bow to get rid of discoloration. the end grain(would you call it that with mdf) is always more absorbant. typically needs more coats of finish too
