Ground confusion - someone help me out

Ok so I've always heard mixed things when it comes to the ground wire of an aftermarket harness.

If you're using an aftermarket harness that plugs into the factory radio harness can you simply splice the black ground wire to the aftermarket radio black harness or do both need to be connected to metal near by? Does it matter? Thanks

use the factory ground, dont worry about grounding it elsewhere unless you run into problems.

So splice the aftermarket black ground wire into the black wire of the harness that plugs into the factory harness?

In other words, both black ground wire's from the two harnesses spliced together. Correct?
