Gratuity fees at restaurants

I myself agree that Gratuity is a good thing to have on a large parties bill because I used to get F*****G stiffed on my bills all the time after i would give really good service to em. I would stay on top of the refills and food as best as I could because sometimes the restaurant would become a zoo.

The reason for it is because the waitstaff has to work their *** off on that one table, and can usually not be able to pay much attention to other tables. Obviously, since there are so many cheap ****ers(^^) around, they need to do this. FYI, standard tipping practice is 15 percent, I usually tip around that unless service was very good or very poor. If you cant or wont tip 15 percent, you shouldnt even bother going out, it should be considered part of the cost. waitstaff make subminimum wage BTW, I'm not sure what it exactly is anymore, but it was like 3 bucks and change before this last minimum wage increase. Try survivng on that.
Depends where you live. Not in Washington. They make at least minimum before tips.

I've got my own system worked out, normally I tip pretty **** good (at least 20%).

To get this you must:

A: Never let my drink run out, or at least get me a refill within a minute or two

B: Bring us the food in a timely manner (I can understand a wait if the place is busy)

C: Check on us frequently, I hate the waiter that drops off the food then disappears for an hour.

D: Just be generally nice

Overall these things should be common sense but often I find myself getting shit service, and my tip reflects it. I think the waiters see me as a college student and expect me to not tip well so they give me shit service...in which case that's exactly what I'm going to do.

I see a small tip as more of a suggestion that they should look for a different job. Some people just aren't cut out for being a waiter/waitress.

Also, I'd like to add, I NEVER tip the girls at Sonic, they make minimum wage and all they're doing is bringing my food to me, I did that shit ALL THE TIME at McDonalds and I never received any tips. I don't tip at car washes, cold stone, or anytime I get carry out. It's ridiculous to think some pizza joints expect a tip when you come pick up the pizza yourself...

Also, there are a lot of cheap *** mother****ers in here. If you plan to go out to a sit down restaurant, expect to pay a tip unless your service is sub-par. Stop being a piece of shit.

If you can't afford a few more dollars for a tip you shouldn't be going out anyways.

The motivation would be keeping their job. Or, should everyone making minimum wage expect tips in order to work up to a reasonable standard?
I agree with what you mean here, but I was directing the comment to the customers.

If they automatically got paid min. wage with no tips then waiters, etc. would not have motivation to work harder to earn the extra tips of their customers.

This thread made me re-adjust how I'm going to go about tipping. I kind of used to feel obligated to tip when I go out even if the service wasn't all that great I would just tip less. But now that I think about it **** that. From now on they're going to have to earn a tip from me. If I get crappy service I'm just not tipping and they can think whatever they want. I don't go out to eat enough fo people to remember me anyways so I won't have to worry about getting spit in my food lol.

I think tips are stupid.
I mean, its their **** job. Why should they get paid extra?

I do it anyways though just because its what everyone does.
i agree. although most waitresses get paid less than $3.00 an hour + tips. depending on the state and type or restaurant it may be a little higher but not much.

if they dont do a good job though they dont deserve a tip plain and simple. "gratuity included" is crap. that just means that even if they do a horrible job they still get a tip for nothing.

Im not reading past this so i dont know if anyone has said anything to you.

They barely get paid because of the tips, waitresses and waiters usually make below minimum wage because they are getting tips. I believe the restaurants need to pay the waiter and waitress and full check and add that in with the cost of food on the menu. Then the word tip can be lost.

I usually tip 20% if the service is good

I have tipped more is the service was fun

I have tipped less if the service sucked........

That being said many people tip like shit and tips is how most servers make a living

Reading the whole thread would be a good idea guys. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Nobody, not waiters and waitresses, not people who cut your hair, not doormen... nobody who works 'above board' (legally, illegal immigrants and under the table jobs obviously dont count).... NOBODY in this country who works legally earns less than minimum wage at the end of the pay period. So please stop making excuses for tip expectant jobs by saying they work for less than minimum wage, they do NOT. That is a fallacy perpetuated by people in those jobs to make you think there is an obligation to tip them. If they dont earn minimum by the end of the pay period, the employer must, BY LAW, reimburse them the difference. Most decent people in these positions make considerably more than minimum after figuring in tips. And depending on how the tips are collected, many can pocket a good portion of their tips without their employer knowing, and STILL get a check for more $ at the end of the pay period because they supposedly didnt make as much in tips as they actually did. Ive known a few waiters and waitresses in the past, it can be a fairly lucrative position, depending on the actual location/job and setup of distribution/collection of tips.

all this "they only get paid $3 an hour" blah blah blah

THEY TOOK THE JOB KNOWING IT PAID THAT MUCH!

jeez, people wanna feel all bad for them

If you take a job that is tips or commission you'd better be friendly and prompt

do you tip a car sales man????

no

I was at olive garden the other night with 10 other people. Didnt know about the gratuity they added in the bill. I ordered something that was $12.75 or $13.00 and the final bill was $19.06....I only went there with $17 and had to bum a few bucks. Doubt ill go back to olive garden if im paying
