Gratuity fees at restaurants

I went to a higher end place to entertain some clients, there was a 9 of us. we got 4 $300 bottles of wine, my food was $75. the waitress was a complete *****. needless to say she didnt get any extra tip. i think the tip 15% of the bill

I was at olive garden the other night with 10 other people. Didnt know about the gratuity they added in the bill. I ordered something that was $12.75 or $13.00 and the final bill was $19.06....I only went there with $17 and had to bum a few bucks. Doubt ill go back to olive garden if im paying
my wife and I had a $57.55 bill at Olive Garden last night, we gave the lady $70, the service was good and there was a huge party of 30+ waiting who just gotten out of the state wrestling championship (they won, congrats) and they walked us right through to a table b/c it was only two of us //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif.

Nobody, not waiters and waitresses, not people who cut your hair, not doormen... nobody who works 'above board' (legally, illegal immigrants and under the table jobs obviously dont count).... NOBODY in this country who works legally earns less than minimum wage at the end of the pay period. So please stop making excuses for tip expectant jobs by saying they work for less than minimum wage, they do NOT. That is a fallacy perpetuated by people in those jobs to make you think there is an obligation to tip them. If they dont earn minimum by the end of the pay period, the employer must, BY LAW, reimburse them the difference. Most decent people in these positions make considerably more than minimum after figuring in tips. And depending on how the tips are collected, many can pocket a good portion of their tips without their employer knowing, and STILL get a check for more $ at the end of the pay period because they supposedly didnt make as much in tips as they actually did. Ive known a few waiters and waitresses in the past, it can be a fairly lucrative position, depending on the actual location/job and setup of distribution/collection of tips.
example here in IL at Cracker Barrel, Bob Evans, Applebee's, etc....

they make $2.00-$3.00 hr before tips. after tips they do pretty good as long as they do their job well and its not totally dead.

and NO the employer does not have to make up the difference by law. the difference is made up BY TIPS. which you are required to report as income. that doesnt mean all tips get reported obviously. especially on a very good day. even more so at places where they are no required to tip out to busboys.

all this "they only get paid $3 an hour" blah blah blah
THEY TOOK THE JOB KNOWING IT PAID THAT MUCH!

jeez, people wanna feel all bad for them

If you take a job that is tips or commission you'd better be friendly and prompt

do you tip a car sales man????

no
did anyone say they felt bad for them?

NO

after tips they get paid pretty damn good as long as its a good day. i hated when i worked in the restaurant industry having to deal with this crap. doing all the work to make sure the waitresses/waiters could keep people at their tables and they made all the money while we got crap pay. didnt stick around the job to long.

I think tips are stupid.
I mean, its their **** job. Why should they get paid extra?

I do it anyways though just because its what everyone does.
you have to be kidding me? youre this dumb? they get around 2$ a hour because they are working nfor tips. they dont get paid to wait on you. the $2.00 a hour is for whatever work they do in the kitchen like dished or prep. your tip is what they get for actually waiting on you.

sorry bud but youre wrong! min wage is min wage everywhere. i deliver pizzas for 7.25 plus tips and commision. dominos on the base that does the most bizness in the US pays there guys $4.someting a hour. not everyone gets minwage. also i get 1.25 per pizza i deliver and they get $.65.....

x2. I was a waitor years ago. Thats how they make their money. I got paid $3.15 an hour. I tip 20 percent for good service, but I will not leave a tip at all if the service is shitty. I have been know to tip way more if the server looks good and flirts well //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I think he may be right. If you end up making less than minimum wage at the end of the pay period, the employer by law has to reimburse you up to minimum wage..

i agree. i mean who would do all that crap just for min wage anyways? a tip is deserveddelivery or eating out.

not when youre on base and its a federal..location...plus you dont have to claim your tips...what if every tip you got was straight cash? you lied and said each person never tipped you. then every week your employeer would have to pay you extra. and trust me pizza places do a lot of shady stuff. like when i walk into work they give me a $20.00 bank. i get $1.25 a run. takes 16 runs to break the bank and i keep the $20.00. tell me how they give me the bank in cash that night? no taxes taken out of it or anything? they just say you had 21 runs? i say yes and i keep the 20 plus 1.35 for every run over 16....straight cash out the register every night...

WRONG

thats why they get to keep their tips. otherwise the tips would go to the employer and not the server.

Sorry guys, Im right, and you both seem to have missed my point. The employer DOES make up the difference, IF the tips claimed do not come out to minimum wage or higher, based off hours worked, at the end of the pay period. The comment about the employer would keep the tips otherwise just shows you missed my point entirely. I have to wonder how closely you guys read what I said. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

I agree with what you mean here, but I was directing the comment to the customers.
If they automatically got paid min. wage with no tips then waiters, etc. would not have motivation to work harder to earn the extra tips of their customers.
I don't get tipped, and I do my ****ing job. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

And I work at a food service place as well. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

The motivation would be keeping their job. Or, should everyone making minimum wage expect tips in order to work up to a reasonable standard?
That.

This thread made me re-adjust how I'm going to go about tipping. I kind of used to feel obligated to tip when I go out even if the service wasn't all that great I would just tip less. But now that I think about it **** that. From now on they're going to have to earn a tip from me. If I get crappy service I'm just not tipping and they can think whatever they want. I don't go out to eat enough fo people to remember me anyways so I won't have to worry about getting spit in my food lol.
Same here. I'm not tipping over 10% from now on unless the service is up to or greater than my expectations.
