Gratuity fees at restaurants

Thumbs Up!
So I went to pick something up tonight from my cousin who manages at a casual bar/restaurant. When I got to the place, there was a group of about 8-9 college kids (mostly female) complaining about their bill. Apparently, they were charged a gratuity fee (basically a tip) on their bill and didnt want to pay it.

My cousin explained to me their policy, which is stated on the menu, is they add a gratuity fee only when its a table of 6 or more. The bill came out to 140ish and the tip was like only $22 (15%), which is not even $2.50 a person. Everybody was paying separately and the majority of them felt like they did not have to pay the fee. They argued for a while and eventually the police had to be called in to resolve it. At the end, they all ended up paying.

What do you guys think? Who was wrong here? Are mandatory tips bs?

I went to a restaurant not too long ago which did this.

Needless to say they did not receive an additional tip.

I usually tip pretty well as long as service was good and food wasn't shit.

But not having a choice is a little off putting. Meh

I'm pretty sure there have been people who have been arrested for refusing to pay the mandatory gratuity.

BS. i only tip if they deserve it. last time my friends and i went to chili we got ignored, no refills, long ass wait to order, long wait to get ketchup, are never ending chips ended and it wasnt even busy, so NO TIP BITCH!

I think tips are stupid.
I mean, its their **** job. Why should they get paid extra?

I do it anyways though just because its what everyone does.
Yeah, what really blows my mind are Sonic waitresses. They expect tips. Seriously, wtf do they do at that job that requires a tip?

The reason for it is because the waitstaff has to work their *** off on that one table, and can usually not be able to pay much attention to other tables. Obviously, since there are so many cheap ****ers(^^) around, they need to do this. FYI, standard tipping practice is 15 percent, I usually tip around that unless service was very good or very poor. If you cant or wont tip 15 percent, you shouldnt even bother going out, it should be considered part of the cost. waitstaff make subminimum wage BTW, I'm not sure what it exactly is anymore, but it was like 3 bucks and change before this last minimum wage increase. Try survivng on that.

Most servers make less than minimum wage, like $3 an hour, with the assumption that their tips will make up the remainder for them to make minimum wage. I usually tip when eating at a nice-ish sit-down restaurant.

Tip jars at Starbucks, Cold Stone, and local sandwich shops piss me off though.
