Gratuity fees at restaurants

Sorry guys, Im right, and you both seem to have missed my point. The employer DOES make up the difference, IF the tips claimed do not come out to minimum wage or higher, based off hours worked, at the end of the pay period. The comment about the employer would keep the tips otherwise just shows you missed my point entirely. I have to wonder how closely you guys read what I said. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif
go get a job as a waiter at a restaurant chain and see if your pay is minimum wage.

and when its not go to them and tell them you expect them to pay you the difference.

then come back and show us they paid you the difference. it will not happen because the do not legally have to because you make your money in tips.

I'll tip IF there is good service. Bad service=NO tip.
I would not pay a "mandatory" tip just because there are 6 or more in my group.
i dont think its right either. just check if there is a mandatory gratuity for X amount or more. if so tell them you need to split yur tables so you dont have to be considered a party that MUST PAY the gratuity

i dunno, my sister is a waitress and youd be amazed at how many people dont tip. doesnt matter if its good service or not. she said that alot of fat or ugly women wont tip at all

you miss the point here big guy. when you go out to eat with a bigger then normal group the manager will not send his crapiest employee to wait on you since there is so many of you. he will send one or more good employees. the reason its added in there is because this better employee got stuck with you guys and you will

A. be more work then a normal table

B. take longer to eat and order and just take longer in general

C. you will want them to go and seperate all the bills and blah blah

this mandatory tip just helps to make sure that guys like some of you dont waste theirtime. they could be working 4 tables but instead only yours...so if 4 tables and each takes 1hour and tips 10 a peice...thats $40.00....but she works you guys a table of 8 for a hour and a half to get a mandatory tip of what $32.00? if anythig they are losing money. and lets be honest a lot of people do not tip good so i think its needed. if you cant go out and pay for the mandatory tip then go to weddys...simple...cops will be called if you dont pay to everyone STFU and eat at home you broke hoes...i mean come on now...OP posted total mandatory tip was less then like what 2.50 a person...LOL get real. people like you guys kill me. just cuz they all ate together they should tip her only $5.00 right? not the mandatory amount...or "oh im not gonna tip since john tipped her already" i love that one. thats just one broke *** riding another broke ***.

or i go back to the same house cuz they ordered again in the same night and they dont wanna tip since i was tipped before LOL i had to drive over here again...more gas and time. i wish all people who dont kow how to tip and yes 97% of black folks dont tip i wish all you cheap guys would just stay at home.

yep and people dont see how much we do besides bring someone their food. when im not delivering im wasing dishes, preping food, answering phones, helping customers, taking trash out...im a jack of all trades i even cook sometimes...the tip is because im driving my car to bring you your food, using my gas, wearing down my car and taking the chance of a accident like when its raining or snowing. this is why you tip. pizza hut charges the $1.75 as a delivery charge since they are still paying me hourly to bring the customer their food. period. if you dont wanna tip then GTFO

I cannot tell if you now get my point, that salary + tips MUST equal minimum wage or higher, otherwise the employer must pay the difference... or if you still have not read my previous posts closely enough to see that Im including tips when I say the employer MUST pay the difference, BY LAW, if salary + tips does not reach federal minimum wage limits. Either way, your comments are simply wrong.

"Today, a similar policy applies to tips. Under federal law, most employers of a tipped employee are only required to pay $2.13 an hour in direct wages if that amount plus the tips received equals at least the federal minimum wage. If an employee’s tips combined with the employer’s direct wages of at least $2.13 an hour do not equal the federal minimum hourly wage, the employer must make up the difference." - Legal Lad : Minimum Wage for Tipped Employees :: Quick and Dirty Tips

.....I multitask at work also....wheres my tip???

I drove my car in ice to work today, I drove it in the snow and in the rain many times....wheres my vehicle reimbursement?

why are you ******* down south complaining about a little ice and snow? you dont get a tip for that, but it sounds like mother nature gave you the shaft //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I bartend p/t @ a club on the weekend and the shit I go thru is amazing!

Dudes order rounds of Patron (usually top of the food chain in a nightclub $8-10 per), sometimes 8-9 shots a clip and dont leave a flipping $1.

Im @ the point where I wont even serve dudes anymore! I make they *** HURRY UP AND WAIT.......

We get alot of "dope boys" hate to use that term but it IS WHAT IT IS, what else do you call a dude with a brick of cash? But anyway these F'ers will make it rain in the club but wont tip either. I tellin you if it wasnt soooooo much fun bartending I would quit!

You really don't get it.

BY FEDERAL LAW, ANY person working a legit job MUST make minimum wage one way or another. If they don't, then that employer is breaking the law. PERIOD.

Waitresses will make a shitty hourly wage with the idea that they will make up to (and most likely over) the minimum wage when their tips are calculated in. If their tips and shitty wage don't add up to the minimum, the employer MUST pay them the difference.

There's no getting around that. It's law.

I thought audioholic made that abundantly clear, but apparently a couple of you guys can't comprehend english very well.

Also, in regards to the topic at hand, I don't like mandatory tips either. However, from what I've seen, if you speak to a manager and complain about the lack of service then it could be adjusted accordingly.

As others have said, I can understand why restaurants do it.

As a person who used to have a job that relied on tips, I usually tip fairly well as long as the service is good.
