hey i'm in a union and they got us good money and benifits. we will probably go on strike in april

Are you people stupid? If workers aren't paid well, how can they even buy the cars they are building? In your view they should just have a bunch of underpaid workers bolting the cars together and they will never be able to even afford an apartment never mind the car they are building.

How can you have an economy if only the CEOs and Executives are making enough money to live?

Stop Union bashing and read a book.

arguably, the money and benefits are too good for the positions in this case. I am in the process of getting my Teamster seniority at UPS, and some of the shit they do is retarded. Once seniority kicks in, I can do just about anything and not lose my job. Unions not only bleed companies dry, but they destroy employee accountability as well. Back in the day when labor laws were nearly nonexistent, the unions were necessary. Now they are out of place and are hurting some of this country's biggest industries.

The point is that these workers are being paid too much for the work they are doing. This is unskilled labor, no education required. These people are starting at roughly the same salary that the people who engineer the cars recieve. The engineers spent at least 4 years and many thousands of dollars to recieve an education in order to get a good starting salary. These factory workers pissed in a cup to prove they weren't on drugs.

i agree some of the crap our union does is stupid but most of us are skilled labor. i have a college degree and that has helped me get a higher tech job at at@t

In all honesty Gm and Ford are not going anywhere. These two companies have a global market and are trying to get their piece of the bailout pie. Gm is threatening massive job losses and they will not make it until the end of the year, BULLSHIT! The boys in DC know they are full of shit, and are going to make them jump through hoops before they get anything.

The goverment bailed out the mortage lenders and insurance companies with no argument because that is where their interest is. The economy is not going to plummet if we can no longer pay insurance premiums to AIG, or get home loans through fannie may. The most devastating thing that can happen at this point is for the BIG 3 to go under, and the economic fallout that would occur would affect everyone employed in the auto industry or not. Everyone with half a brain can see the forecast if this were to happen.

I would venture to say Ford could survive on their global truck market alone. Much of their business is comercial and fleet sales. GM sells more American produced shit boxes than anyone and they turn a hell of a profit on them. Chrysler would be the only one I would even begin to believe was in a real state of finacial failure, but they sell the majority of the minivans that are on the road.

The people that are really hurting in the automotive industry are the dealerships, that have financed the inventory that is sitting on the lots and cant sell them.

Labor should be supply/demand just like anything else. Nobody is entitled to anything but a "reasonable" wage relative to market conditions for that job. Unions inflate the cost of products via higher wages therefore making the companies less competitive in the market.

UAW can eat a fat dick and let the big 3 fail and they can all lose jobs if they won't work for the same money as US based import auto assembly plants. If they can't see the job > no job equation then they deserve to all be laid off.

Do you guys really think $20/hr is that much money? I think the unions **** and they need to make some changes but $20 bucks and hour does not seem like shit to me that's what 40k a year?
Don't know the whole story, don't really care I just saw $20/hr thrown around a lot which is what I would consider the bare minimum to get by here.
I guess it just depends where you are. I make close to 14 an hour, so close to 25 plus a year and I get by just fine in Ohio, but 14 wouldn't do shit over by you.

My mom was making 28 an hour at Delphi before she took the buy out and retired.......actually she took the retirement plan where she gets 1200 a month plus her benefits. Not sure how this will turn out for her if there is no bail out. I want to see them fail, but I don't, because I am afraid she may lose her 1200 a month, which she relies a lot on.

Also it seems like everyone is bashing the employees who make this high wage. Don't blame them for bishing about their wages. Once you are so used to making so much and having shit taken away, you would all be bishing as well. My parents went through having to change their lifestyle because my mom took the retirement, because at the time she though her job was going to be shipped to Mexico, which she was told it was. Well a few weeks after she retires they keep her job and hire in people at 10 bucks an hour to do her job. They did offer her that, but she turned it down. Until your in the situation of making close to 70,000 a year and going down to 20,000 dollars a year, then you just can't understand. I have personally seen what my parents go through and it has sucked for them, but they are making it, just living differently.

70,000 to 0 dollars a year would be worse //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

i think its bull but what i dont understand is why they dont do like world wars and tell the big 3 to assemble planes, tanks and truck for the military, people will keep their jobs and the automakers could thrive on pretty much this alone until the economy stabalizes. Too much is outsourced, one reason the economy sucks.

average Toyota worker at Georgetown makes about $25 an hour
A GM worker makes about $28 an hour. Not much of a difference. The GM new hires only make $14 an hour no benefits, no sub pay, no health care, and no pension after retirement. When you factor in benefits to the $28 it takes it up to about $35-$38 for an active employee.
