Turning the engine off will not make the amp clip prematurely. It will clip at exactly the same level as before, given the same input voltage. If anything, having the engine off will lower input system voltage to the amp, lowering the chances of clipping its output stage.
Its like someone going to the doctor and saying 'my knee hurts when I bend it' and the doctor replying 'then dont bend it'. Stating to just leave the engine on doesn't help locate the problem. Also, some sanctioned events require the engine to be off (or at least, some use to).
If he has a bad battery, its more easily noticeable when the alternator is not providing current. When the alt IS providing current, a faulty/weak battery is harder to diagnose, but still poses issues to the system.why not turn your car on
