The variable heat stations are kind of nice, mostly because you can turn it down if you're doing small stuff (a resistor) and dial it up big time if you need to (soldering a 0 gauge wire). The Weller I use is really nice, and you can't go wrong with a Fluke meter. However, if you're only doing light work on a rare occaision (to make sure you're getting 12v at your battery, for example), then just about any meter will do. They've got a decent one at Radio Shack for like $20.
