how long of drywall screws should you use on mdf? and also should you use coarse screws or fine?

id go with at least 1 5/8" and use the coarse ones

At least 1 5/8"? No, instead I say between 1.25 and 1 5/8. Any longer and you are just wasting the rest of the screw and threatening to split your wood.

BUT, if you predrill correctly, you shouldnt split the wood with a longer screw.

You could put in a six inch screw if it were pre-drilled properly
