They illegal due to fear of interference with other electric devices, not because the cops think they work... Laser works on rolling frequencies, just like a pager remote does for an alarm. Kinda hard to jam something that's on a random frequency, when it only takes a fraction of a second to pop you, and they can do it from over a mile away with a good shot. Ka Band is easy to **** with, but it's a system full of holes anyways. That's why cops rarely show up for tickets, cause they're usually clocked with Ka Band. Ka Band shoots a group of cars, and shows the speed for the fastest of the bunch. The officer is then required to visually decide which car is doing that speed. So it's not you vs. the radar, it's you vs. a quick glance into traffic, at a specific group of cars, by an officer 100+ feet away.

But anyway I mainly use it because I take the highway to work. 30 miles, also do allot of traveling. I haven't had a ticket since a week after I got my liscense. Just pay attention, and think how they think, and you'll see their hiding spots even if they're not in them at the moment.

I caught one coming back from a party this morning, posted up around the corner from the bridge. Radar went off, got around the bridge and he was sitting there. I was laughing my *** off.

The best radar detector you can buy is a Valentine 1. I've had mine for 6 years. You never have to buy a new one. Just send it in for an update about every 2-3 years and its great. It has arrows to tell you where the police are, and when you've passed them, along with detector cells on the front and back.

BTW, haven't had a ticket since I bought it. Although, there is nothing you can do against laser. Once they hit you there's no hope.

Yeah valentine 1 wins hands down. I've had the valentine 1 and the x50. I used the x50 for a few months, then decided to try out the v1. The v1 is far better at detecting radar over a hill/around a corner than the x50. It also gives far better protection against instant-on by detecting it from the cars in front of me. That's something my x50 never did -- it never gave me a warning when the cars in front of me were being hit with I/O.

As far as jammers go, radar jammers are illegal in the U.S -- it's a felony if you're caught with one that actually works. Anything that's being marketed as a radar jammer in the U.S (Rocky Mountain Radar for example) is really just an expensive paper weight.

However, laser jammers are not illegal in most states, as far as I know there's only 9 states with a law against them. It's true they aren't 100% effective, but if they're set up properly they can help out in some situations. The "laser interceptor" was found to be 96% effective in this test against most of the laser guns used in the USA.

Buying a radar detector is like buying anything else -- you get what you pay for. You can't go wrong with either the passport x50 or the v1, but IMO the V1 offers much better detection than the x50 ever did for me. If you decide to go with the V1, you can call them and ask for a refurb unit, and they'll give you 10% off.

You're thinking of radar and not laser..

Radar does cause problems more frequently. Alot of the emergency light toggles work off of a laser signal.
