getting some really LOUD engine noise in my subs!

you have just a radio and an amp ? no processors or x-overs? if you don't move the HU to the trunk and plug the HU's RCA into the amp with gender connectors and wire for power. do you hear noise????

Originally posted by blaupunk Yea, i just have a Hu and an amp. and can i get a pair of gender connectors at radio shack or something? If i get some, ill try doing that

Thanks
yup ---radio shack----how many RCA channels do you run to the noise making amp?

Well, i went to radio shack and got a pair of male gender connectors. I plugged the Hu directly into the amp and gave it power and i still got the engine noise from my sub. So now what should i try. The Hu was in the trunk right by the amp, of course, sharing the same ground and power. let me know

Thanks man

If the wire is thick enough and properly secured to chasiss, there should be plenty of room for the h/u ground.

The amp may have a poor ground. ground amp to different spot. Try the floor pan. You may want to run a 2nd ground back to - battery. Make sure that the amp, head unit is not touching metal.

put the amp on a isolated power supply -----110v-12v OR a battery not connected to the car-------the amp doesn't have enough isolation. if it's clean then you'll have to buy groundloop isolators and ALSO find a car body ground with NO noise------find this by using a magnetic pickup[ old tape head] connected a small amp or you amp on a isolated supply. grounding at the battery is the worst thing you could do as that is the NOISEST place

I think it is my ground, as i moved it to a different location and the noise reduced, but it is still there. Explain again how to find a ground wiht no noise, i didn't understand exactly the first time, thanks once again

did you put it on a isolated supply--battery or 12v inverter???? you have to--- you want to see if the amp shuts up then continue getting the noise out of the system.. Best to ground closer to the HU BUT really it's the amps cheap power supply. WIth a well made power supply you would have to worry about where to ground. you should buy some good ground loop isolators to help with the noise Explain again how to find a ground wiht no noise, i didn't understand exactly the first time, thanks once again do you have an old tape player walk man? you need the tape head out of it. you use the tape head and wire it to an RCA plug. This is your noise listening device. plug it into an ISOLATED amp or selfpowered speaker. listen for the noise. Find a unnoisy area and try that as a ground

I hooked up an external batter to my amp, and the noise is gone. So does that mean i have to find a better ground? im not sure, let me know, thanks

P.S. how do you hook up rcas to the head of the walkman?

yup-plus buy ground loop isolators

rip out the HEAD and wire one one wire to the center pin of the RCA and the other to the outer shield.----------------simple

Sorry, I was wrong, i thought the noise was gone but i put my ear really close to the sub and could still hear a small whining coming from it, even with the external battery hooked up to it. This is driving me insane. What to do

P.S. SHould i ground the amp to the external battery? (from the terminal on the amp to the terminal on the -- of the battery?)

unplug the RCA cables if you hear a noise when on the power supply-----is the noise there?? if not continue with the ground loop isolators and finding a ground near or at the HU ground
