Getting my first system, are these good?

So if I go out and grab something like this: 12 in ported sub box - eBay (item 270595151217 end time Jun-20-10 09:37:56 PDT)
And get one of the subs you guys recommended? That would be decent? Seems like that would also save me a little $ then what I originally had chosen.
Not really. A subwoofer is only as good as the enclosure it's put in. If the enclosure isn't right for the sub, you won't get the performance you paid for. For example, the MB Quart sub that I showed you is designed for relatively small sealed enclosures. If you put that sub into a larger, ported enclosure, it won't perform as it was designed to. Once again; Most prefabricated subwoofer enclosures ****. That's just the way it is.

I recommended the RWE-302 for several reasons, man. It's well built, it's cheap as hell, it handles a decent amount of power, it sounds clean and it'll wire to a 4 ohm load which suits the MB Quart DSC4125 amp just fine.

I recommended the MB Quart DSC4125 for several reasons as well. It's also well built, it's relatively inexpensive, it's extremely flexible (can be used to power a pair of components + sub/s) and it has a pretty solid reputation.

Instead of paying $30 - $50 for a prefab enclosure, you should be looking for the services of a box designer/builder. There was a guy on the forum not long ago building sealed enclosures to spec for $30 apiece.

I understand you, seems complicated. I don't think I'm advanced enough with this stuff to understand all of this. I'll take everything you've said into consideration. If I can find a box fit for the sub I'll get it because a clean sound is what I'm looking for and not something thunderous.

It's not like your ears will detect the difference between a custom built one and a pre-fab one.
incorrect.

When you get more money, get something better.
Or buy the amp & sub I recommended and have something solid to build around RIGHT NOW!

That was a terrible ninja edit btw. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

If you're looking for something clean, you will not be disappointed by the MB Quart sub I recommended.

If you absolutely insist on buying a prefab enclousre, take a look at this one. It pairs with the RWE-302 pretty well.

The MB Quart sub needs .95 cubic feet and the enclosure I linked is 1.05. After the sub's displacement, that should be really close...

Thanks man. If my stereo comes out too much, would be okay to go w/ a slightly cheaper amp and pair it w/ the subwoofer you recommended?

Certain things come into play, man. The sub I showed you can only be wired to 1 or 4 ohms. You'll either need a monoblock amplifier that's 1 ohm stable or a multi channel amp, like the DSC4125, that can be bridged to produce power @ 4 ohms.

Some amplifiers produce the same amount of power regarless of impedance, but they tend to be expensive (JL Audio slash series and Alpine PDX). To be honest, the DSC4125 is the amp to get. You'll want to upgrade your door speakers at some point and with the dsc4125 you'll already have the power on tap. Seriously, $170 is NOT too much to pay for an amplifier.

You really need to think about what you're getting yourself into, man. Car audio is not cheap, even if you're shooting for something modest. Extremely inexpensive equipment is usually cheap for a reason. And we haven't even talked about wiring. Decent wiring isn't cheap either...

Understood. For some reason I thought your amp was $200. Okay, so your setup so far is $299. What would the wiring cost?

You should also take a look through the classifieds here on the forum. Some of these guys have really nice, barely used equipment for extremely fair prices. You could, in theory, get yourself some relatively high end gear for the amount of money you're looking to spend.

If you see something that interests you in the classifieds, just post a link to it here...
