General questions and answers. Elaboration on all things audio and the facts.

This is interesting however. Some vague generalizations that arent always an end all be all. Like power input for example. Im running a sub with 30mm in a 4.2cu box...but im running double the rated power and can max it out mechanically easily...how much port area should i be running? Also, im tuned low, 29hz...and from my experience you can do less port area tuned low....so for those more knowledgeable than me, how much port should i run? Curious to see how close, or far off I am
The lower the tuning the more Port area this is because a lower frequency requires more Excursion therefore the lower the tune the more Port area you would want. As long as you're not getting any compression or noise you should be good.

The only reason people associate box size with port area is because a larger box allows more Excursion with the same amount of power.

This is the reason that the formula is solely based on tbe subs displacement and tuning. if in your specific box the woofer itself is capable of 30 millimeters each way with a sd of 120 inches (cone area) you should have between 80 and 100in^2..

If sd(cone area) is like 120 which is about a 12" woofer you want 80-100" or port for 1 12" woofer that have 30mm of excursion? That's seems like an awful big port.

It's a ton of displacment. Most subs dont reach those levels at tuning //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif typically you will see 15mm of so at tuning with 3kw.

Model you sub up and see how much it will move at tuning and then apply that to the formula.

I went on sundown audio website and for the zv4 12 they suggested 2.5cube box with 40" of port... That's like half of what your suggesting. This is hard need to just let a shop make my box.
