Gain setting/tuning question

Hey everyone,

Ok so I understand that setting the gains properly is to have the right amount of volts to give the rated watts. For example My amp puts out 850W@2 Ohm, and to do that it needs 41.2V, so I need my gain to give me 41.2V...

I need to set my HU to 75% (i dont have an osciliscope) which should be the max volume before clipping, play a 50hz test tone and then turn the gain until 41.2V...

This means when my volume is at 75% I am giving my sub 850W (in theory).

Now the questions:

1. Daily driving I don't go past level 18/35, my gains are set for 26/35. So if I'm playing at 18/35 I can turn the subwoofer output up to like +10 lets say so that the sub lines get more volts and not the rest of the system, right? Because my sub might be able to handle 26/35 but my coaxs wont be able to. Could I set my gains with the volume at like 20, subwoofer out to like +6 and set them to 41.2V, that way I could have it dead on 850W for daily driving? Or should I set it as normal and simply turn up the subwoofer out if I want more bass at 20/35. Should I test how far I can put the sub out to at 20/35 before it goes to 41.2V?

I think all that is valid, is all that true?

Second Question:

2. My sub is a 12" type-R and my amp is an MRP-M850...The R is rated for 500W RMS, but can apparently handle a lot more...up to like 1000 daily. The amp puts out 850W. How can I tell if the sub is getting too much watts? Could I tell from the excursion? Would I hear it? How do I know if I'm pushing it too far? Is there any way to measure it?

Thats it, thanks a lot to anyone who takes the time to read this and give me some input //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I would be careful how much power you feed that thing....I have had a pair of Type R's off 1k watts. They do sound like they could take more but I don't know if one could handle 850 on its own...

Ok now that we know the R can take 850, what about the gain/tuning questions? And also is there any real way of seeing if the sub is being pushed too hard?

Alright, what about the first question guys, this is the one I'm more interested in:

when setting the gain, you should have the SW setting on your HU set as high as theyll go. also, make sure the "loudness" is off and your EQ is off or on flat.

Broke the former completely in half!

Haha I love the pic, I'll be sure not to give it 2k W lol.

So from what I understand you guys are saying to set my gains using the settings ill be using daily, that way it will be doing my 850W when I put it to those settings.
