Gain question

I know this is a stupid question and asked all the time, but I have used the search function to set my gains. I used a 60 hz test tone and a DMM to check the voltage coming from my amp. After using this equation: SQRT ( RMS wattage x impedance ) and setting my gain until I got this number at 3/4 HU volume my gain ended up more than 3/4 to the highest i can turn it up. This just feels wrong to me, am I going to hurt anything by having my gain this high? Any input is appreciated, thanks.

My deck settings are all zero, I have the equalizer at zero, bass boost at zero, loudness etc all at zero. It sounds loud but not distorted. I mostly just don't want to hurt my amp.
