gain and watts output

I was wondering if these are related and if the gain is set lower will this make the amplifier produce less wattage to the sub.

That's what the gain knob does it controls the amount of power going to the subs based on the preout voltage of your headunit. i.e. You may need to turn the gain up more to reach the desired power output if your headunit has 2v preouts compared to one with 6v preouts. Remember, the gain controls power, not volume

thanks I always had issues if it was just volume matched to the headunit or watts

Very few amps have a gain knob where it auto detects the preout voltage so it is pretty much like a volume knob.
