Fusing alternator pos. to battery pos.

Ive seen some bad stuff happen with peoples alts and nearly catch the car on fire...I fuse mine
/\ X2. Just fuse it, so you never have to worry about walking outside to a pile of burnt sh!t. Spending 20 bucks on a fuse and holder isn't a big deal. And if it is, then I guess you'll find out if you needed a fuse or not..

The stock one doesn't have a fuse... but I think I'll just do it without a fuse, order it right now, and then just cut the wire and fuse it when the fuse arrives.

Have you traced that entire wire to make sure there's no fuse? Some cars have the alt wire go to the fusebox, then to the battery. Or the fuse is hidden somewhere wrapped in wire loom and tape near the alt.

if you are running the wire from alt to battery and stock is still there you shouldnt have to. if you are replacing the stock wire then yes you need to.
Not saying that's wrong, but I don't see where it makes sense. I left the stock wiring as it was and added a fused 1/0 to my alt to battery.

you already have a fused wire going to the battery by adding the extra (also thicker wire) you are just allowing more of the stock alt current to the battery. and unless you have an alt with a flux capacitor it shouldnt burn up the wire or the battery (assuming that you have good batteries/alt to begin with)

The point of a fuse is to protect the wire. You are adding a wire going directly to the + positive terminal on the battery. Most cars are - negative ground, if that wire were to somehow or in someway get cut, frayed, stripped, what have you and short to ground the fuse is going to stop the current from the positive terminal of the battery hence fusing within like 12 inches or less from the batt. If it is not fused you run the risk of it burning right up along with anything else in its path. The reason the stock might not be fused is because the maker designated its path to the alternator in a way as to not present any danger of shorting to ground.

Please, correct me if I am wrong.

first off, i dont have my h/o alt fused. but if one were to do so, where would you put the fuse? closer to the battery or closer to the alt?

technically you would need two fuses then, just like fusing between batteries. a fuse leaving the alt, and a fuse right next to the battery. because if the wire were to get stripped/frayed/what have you, you still have power on both ends (battery and alt still putting out juice) so either way shits still going to catch on fire where ever its frayed and is touching metal.
