As close as you can. The part of wire in between the two, if it touches ground, there's no fuse to protect you, so best bet is as close as possible

theoretically you want it ON the battery post, but I don't know of many applications where that is practical, or possible.

I agree with anni, as close as you can.

18" is a stupid number.

Try to get it as close as possible.

The reason 12-18" is mention is that at that point, there is usually a good safe mounting location. Every application is difference, so make it as close as conveniently possible
